Jonah

Have you read the story of Jonah lately? I came across it in some other reading yesterday and had to stop and take a closer look. Jonah's prayer of confession and repentance in Chapter 2 speaks powerfully. Listen to how he cries out to the Lord from the belly of the great fish ...

Jonah 2:7 "When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered you, LORD,
and my prayer rose to you,
to your holy temple.

8 "Those who cling to worthless idols
forfeit the grace that could be theirs.

9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving,
will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
Salvation comes from the LORD."

10 And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

My prayer for myself and for you, my friends and loved ones, is that we would not forfeit the grace that could be ours by clinging to any worthless idol, no matter how good it may appear. My desire is that we would hear the Word of the Lord for our lives and choose to obey joyfully rather than end up in a hell of our own choosing, broken into submission, and vomitted into obedience.

Everytime I start to come down hard on Jonah, I realize that I must come down hard on myself as well. It's good to be reminded of Jonah often.
