So, I’m saving Mom and the Grandmothers for next week, but I think I can go ahead and talk about Aunt Susan today. My Aunt Susan, my Aunt Susan! Any of you who follow me on Facebook know that my Aunt Susan is the most talented cookie artist ever. Ever. She goes by Sue B Sweets and people order her cookies and have them shipped all over the United States because they’re just that good.
What you probably don’t know is that my Aunt Susan is one of the most faithful, godly women of influence any young woman could be blessed to know. There are many things I could talk about that I have learned from her life, but I think the one that has been by far the most influential is prayer.
I have the most vivid memory of being about 9 or 10 years old, standing next to her kitchen table in her little two bedroom house where she, Uncle Tracey, and my three little cousins lived at the time. Aunt Susan was painting little decorative pins to sell at a craft show with the most creative, detailed hand I’ve ever seen … and she was talking to me about prayer.
She told me that I could talk to Jesus about anything, that He was very interested in the details of my life and my thoughts. And, she told me about how she began praying, even when she was a very little girl, for a godly husband and family. She told me about things she prayed for her daughters even before they were born. She encouraged me to pray every day for all the things that were on my heart to tell Jesus, and she encouraged me to begin even then praying for the man God would have me marry.
I took her words to heart. I believed her, and in turn, have learned to believe God. And, someday, should I ever marry, thanks to Aunt Susan, I will be able to tell someone I have prayed for him for 20 years and counting. J
