Maybe it's because she's a woman. Maybe it's because she's got a cool accent. Maybe it's because she quotes scripture as easily as she breathes. Maybe it's because she's passionate about an issue and doing something to change it. I can't say why for sure, but Christine Caine's is the talk that continues to echo in my mind two days later.
Christine Caine is the founder of A21, an effort to abolish human trafficking in the 21st century. Christine boldy asks the question, "How is it possible in the 21st century, on our watch as the church of Jesus Christ, that human beings are being packed into shipping containers and sold into slavery?"
I think what I appreciated so much about her audacity is that her Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) is rooted in her hope in the power of Jesus Christ. She says mildly, "I'm just old school enough to believe that Jesus Christ is the hope of the world." I want to be that old school, too! She challenges Christian leaders saying, "We have a responsibility to lead people out of a place of hope. If we don't believe we can make a difference, why get out of bed?"
Another of her thoughts that keeps ringing in my ears is this, "The truth of the Word of God is more powerful than the facts." In other words, we ought not be deterred by circumstantial evidence. God's Word is alive and active and powerful. His truth is bigger than whatever it is we think might stop us.
Her call to Christian leaders is to take risks fueled by Hope rooted in Christ. She tells a charming story about purchasing a flashlight for her young daughter. As she handed the child the flashlight, her daughter says, "Mommy, let's go find some darkness!" Christine likens this to the call for believers. We have the Light of Christ, and our purpose is to go find the darkness and light it up!
